Citron. A slice in Danish. Or something..

“Citron” is a beautiful shawl by Hilary Smith Callis. It is not a new pattern, but published in Knitty Magazine, in the Winter 2009 issue.

I have been eyeing this shawl for ages, and a few months ago I even spun some merino/cashmere lace yarn with Citron i mind.

The beginning of “Casino Citron”. A very pleasant knitting project

In the Danish Spinning Guild, Spindeforeningen, we are going to have a SAL/KAL next month, and I am to “host” it, or kick start it.. So I thought it might be a good idea if I was a little ahead of things, and cast on for my “Casino Citron” last week.

But first I translated the pattern into Danish, and asked permission from the designer to publish the Danish version. Through Ravelry the pattern is available in I think at least 10 different languages, but Danish is not one of them..
Hilary has now kindly given me permission to publish the Danish version in my blog and link it to the Ravelry database – yay! Not that the English pattern in any way is difficult to follow or understand, but my guess is that some of our guild members will be reluctant to work from directions given in English.

So, thank you very much, Hilary! 🙂
– I’ll set up the pattern page very soon, but first I’m going to grab some dinner: veggie lasagna, mmmm..

Donau. A short cardi in handspun yarn

Yesterday I finished this:

Tone in "Donau".
Tone in “Donau”.

This is my sweet daughter Tone modelling “Donau”, my new handspun cardigan.

From behind. I like the way the colors flow..

She is a size XS, and the cardigan fits her perfectly! It’s now up to me to calculate the stitch and row numbers for other sizes (S, M, L and XL), and to write the pattern for the webshop. It is a very simple construction, so that won’t be a too much of a problem, I’m sure. I guess I’ll need to test knit at least one of the larger sizes, just to be sure that I’m not completely off track, and to get a feeling of the amount of yarn that is to be used for the larger sizes..

It is knitted in welt-pattern using a needle size 6 mm (US size 10), so it was a quick knit. Nice, for a change..

The yarn for Donau is the result of a monthly challenge that is going on over on Ravelry, in the Danish Spinner’s Group.
The theme this month was “An der Schönen blauen Donau” (On the Blue Danube), and I was immeditately inspired to haul down five differne colourways from the shelves: Cougar, Icarus, Rhodos, Glittertind and Sailor. Here they are:

Colors: Sailor, Glittertind, Rhodos, Icarus and Cougar
Colors: Sailor, Glittertind, Rhodos, Icarus and Cougar

I combined the colous to make 10 different skeins, bulky singles yarn. It was a quick spin, and very enjoyable!

Spinning and knitting heavy singles

I needed a quick-and-easy, but still good-looking, project. So I picked out five of my handpainted wool tops, combined the colours in a most complicated (not!) way and began the spinning..

The final yarn is wonderful! Heavy, multicolour, and ten different skeins.

For the knitting project I decided on a short jacket or cardi, to be held together with one or maybe two buttons. Negative ease, tight fit. The fabric is very stretchy, so I think my idea will work fine!

Right now I am working on the first sleeve, so hopefully I’ll soon be finished. The yarn knits up quickly on needles 6 mm. Love it so far!

I also dug deep in the pile of unfinished projects today.. Surfaced with something that is meant to become a blanket for my son. A stash-busting throw for his bed. In mitered square modules. Sat down and knitted a bit. Decided that I really need more blue yarns, so now I have fired up this little Cascade spindle and some royal blue fiber..

The weather is fantastic, so I’m working out in the back yard today.. 🙂

Now finished!

It lives around my neck. Not easy to get it off..

I love how the Brande Shawl turned out! Here’s a look at the whole Shawl:

I have been playing around with some textured yarns lately. Here is a yarn I spun yesterday, out of lovely grey wool locks and a multicolour merino strand that had been sitting around on a drop spindle for a few years.. Old an new meet..

And this one is a coiled yarn. Very fun spin!.. :

Almost there..

Just a few more rows and my very own version of The Brande Shawl (designed by talented Bente Hein) will be done! Hooray!!

I am really enjoying this knit. It is a very easy-to-remember pattern and the project is portable. But most I love it because of the beautiful shifting of colours along the way.. 🙂 The handspun yarn in “withering asters” colorway is responsable for that. The brown Opus-yarn is also not quite solid, but changes from lighter to darker brown.

The pattern for The Brande Shawl can be ordered in my webshop:
GarnGalleriet
You can choose between English and Danish language.

The beginning..

..of a shawl:

The Brande Shawl in making
The Brande Shawl in the making

The Brande Shawl was designed by the very talented knitter and designer Bente Hein for the knit-event that took place in the fall last year: Brande Strikkefestival.
Now I have persuaded Bente to let me sell her pattern (as a loose pattern as well as a kit) in the webshop. But first I need to knit the beautiful shawl in some of my own yarns, and then I need to put together some kits.. So: back to knitting! 🙂

Newly spun yarn

20130218-071148.jpg

This yarn is merino/bamboo in my own colorway “withering asters”. This colorway is from November ’12 fiberklub.
I have spun the singles using a Bosworth spindle, then plied two strands together on my wheel.
Finished the other night, and I like it! Soft, soft, soft..

Fighting the flu.

What better way to overcome this awful cold and fever than just taking it easy and knit a bit, in between naps?
My daughter asked me to make her a sweater. She is 13 and knows exactly how she wants her new sweater to look: white, raglansleeves, rolled hem at neckline, plain stockinette stitch for the main body, ribbed edges downwards.

Very easy project! My only complaint was about all that whiteness.. But once I got to work with the fibers and spin the yarn – a 2-ply aran-weight, made of mainly BFL wool, spiced up with some silk, alpaca, merino, bamboo and ingeo fiber – I actually found it very pleasant to work with undyed fibers. Who would have thought that..
Now working on the first sleeve. Will run out of yarn shotly, so I need to spin some more to finish it up. My daughter can’t wait..

I just hope this influenza-mightmare is very soon over..

Pansy Tam

Image

I made this tam in the traditional fair isle style.
The yarn is 2-ply shetland wool. I spun 8 colours from one of my fiber-wheels, the September club-colour “Moorland”.
Then I charted the patterns and knitted the tam using the 3 darkest colours as background and the 5 brightest as pattern colours. Then I wrote the pattern (for now in Danish language only, but I’ll do an english version too..) and it’s now ready to enter the shop!

Hey! If you happen to be near Brande tomorrow you can come by and say hello at Brande Strikkefestival. I’ll be there with my handpainted fiber, my handspun yarns, patterns and some left over yarns from when I closed the physical shop this spring.

Busy days = Happy days!

Business is going so well, I simply have too little time to blog. What a luxury problem! 🙂

I have recently accepted a rather large order from one of this countrys most loved knitting and weaving yarn supplier. This one: BC Garn.
BC Garn has asked me to handpaint a big quantity of knitting yarns for them to sell to yarn shops around the country. First I have been test-dyeing, then it was approved (yay!) and two days ago I recieved two enormous boxes of very white yarn to work on.. I’m so happy to get this opportunity, and very exited about it all. Can’t wait to see “my” yarn in the local yarns shops, and later also the garments made from it..
It’s just awesome! 🙂

Do you want to have a sneak peek at some of the colours? Here’s two batches I did last week:
